Stalin's Forced Famine

What motivated the crimes?

Joseph Stalin took over the country after the death of Lenin in 1924. He set in motion events designed to cause a famine in the Ukraine to destroy the people there seeking independence from his rule. Stalin put in a method to “crush the people’s free spirit”, he began to employ the same methods he had used within the Soviet Union. Stalin wanted the Soviet Union to be a powerful country, with an excellent control economy, and a ruthless army.

How did the country respond to atrocities?
To be frank the country could barely respond to anything, they’re rights were taken from them. Stalin made sure no one opposed his ideas. The people’s freedom was taken from them, they were given no power. Stalin impoverished the Soviet system of land management known as collectivization. Eighty percent of the populations were traditional village farmers. The wealthy farmers, known as the “Kulaks” were left homeless and their possessions were taken from them, all because Stalin declared them to be “enemies of the people”. Obviously the people were extremely overwhelmed and shocked. Citizens knew they couldn’t do anything, the only thing they could do is starve and watch their lives fritter away.

How did the world respond to the atrocities?
It seemed to be that the world was aware of the suffering in the Soviet Union but little was done. Countries around the world seemed to be quite careless. In the spring of 1933, citizens in Europe, America, and Canada who were of Ukrainian descent responded to the news reports by sending in food supplies. Soviet authorities halted all food shipments at border; they tried to deny the existence of famine and refused any outside assistance. As much as the world knew what was going on, there wasn’t a lot that could be done. In the same year (1933) Roosevelt tried to negotiate a new trade agreement with the Soviet Union, but a year later was ended due to the famine, in order to make the deal the Soviet Union had to deal and control the famine.

How was the conflict brought to a resolution?
Stalin, with his immediate objectives achieved, allowed food distribution to resume inside the Ukraine and the famine ceased. Hitler’s troops arrived in the Ukraine to rob the breadbasket of Europe and simply replaced “one reign of terror with another”.
